Newspapers covering the story published several sketches of Sarah.

Sarah Mumford lived in a Rochester orphanage before the Tripp family took her in at age eleven. The family insisted they treated her as a daughter. Neighbors gave a different account. Sarah complained they treated her cruelly and she worked like a servant.
